On the morning of August 28, Jiang Zeting, Council Chair of China University of Political Science and Law (CUPL), and Ma Huaide, President of CUPL, met separately with a delegation from SOAS, University of London led by its PresidentDirector, Adam Habib, at the university’sHaidian Campus. Vice President Lu Chunlong also attended the related activities.

Jiang Zeting extended a warm welcome to Adam Habib and his delegation, and provided a comprehensive overview of CUPL’s achievements in student quality, talent cultivation, graduate employment and further studiespostgraduate studies, disciplinary development, and institutional academic reputation. He highlighted that in recent years, CUPL has vigorously promoted a “one center, multiple bases” educational framework, with makingsteady progress in Hainan, Xinjiang, and Xiong’an. In particular, the development of Hainan International School will serve as a solid platform for future joint education programs between the two universities. He noted that the two institutions are highly complementaryhave complementary strengths in disciplines such as law, political science, and international relations, offering broad prospects for cooperation. He expressed the hope that both sides will seize policy opportunities, accelerate the pace ofcollaboration, ensure the quality of joint programs, and work together to cultivate top-level legal professionals with a global vision and strong a goodcommand of international rules, thereby contributing to Sino-British educational exchanges and the construction development of Hainan Free Trade Port.

Ma Huaide reviewed the longstanding friendship and fruitful cooperation achievements between the two universities. He stated that Adam Habib’s visit reflected the great importance attached to demonstrated the importance placed onthe joint education programs and wouldeffectively advancecooperationstoward practical outcomesmove the cooperation forward in a substantive way. Looking ahead, he expressed his expectationthat both universities would further strengthen cooperation in their respective academic strengthsthe hope that both universities would further leverage their academic strengths, deepen academic exchanges and joint talent training in the fields of law, humanities and social sciences, and enhance joint talent training. He President Ma also extended a sincere invitation to Adam Habib and other scholars from SOAS to attend the Third World Jurists Forum to be held next year in 2026.

Adam Habib expressed his gratitude for CUPL’s warm reception. He introduced SOAS’s close and longstanding ties highlighted SOAS’s longstanding closeties with China since its founding in 1916. Unlike some British universities that prioritize establishing overseas branches, SOAS attaches greater importance to deep collaborations collaborationwith high-quality leading universities in Asia and Africa, especially in China, with the aim of cultivating high-level talents professionalsequipped with international vision and internationalruleswith a global vision and solid knowledge of internationalrules. He stressed that the partnership with CUPL is highly consistent aligns well with SOAS’s international cooperation philosophy philosophy of international engagement and development strategy. He looked forward to building a comprehensive, sustainable, and pragmatic, efficient and pragmatic cooperation mechanism spanning academic research, talent cultivation, and beyondamong other areas.
During the meeting, representatives of the two universities signed theMemorandumofUnderstandingon Joint Education Programs Letter of Intent on Joint Education Programs, laying a solid foundation for subsequent cooperation. The delegation also visited the Qian Duansheng Memorial Hall.

CUPL participants included; Sun Yuanzhi, Standing Committee Member of the CUPL Party Committee, Minister of the United Front Work Department of CUPL, and Director of the University Office of CUPL (Policy Research Office); Luo Zhimin, Director of the Academic Office; Xu Xizheng, Executive Dean of the Hainan Free Trade Port Rule of Law Research Institute(also known as theHainan International School), who attended the meeting online; Lv LyuYong, Director of the Office of International Cooperation and Exchange; and Yu Wenxuan, Associate Dean of the Civil, Commercial and Economic Law School, among others.
