On the evening of November 8, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Italian President Sergio Mattarella jointly met in Beijing with representatives attending the China-Italy Cultural Cooperation Mechanism Conference and the China-Italy University Presidents’ Dialogue. The two heads of state engaged with representatives who reported on ongoing and future initiatives in cultural and academic collaborations between China and Italy.

Professor Ma Huaide, President of China University of Political Science and Law (CUPL), attended the event as an invited delegate.

CUPL’s collaborative ties with Italian higher education institutions trace back to the late  1980s, marking a pioneering partnership in Chinese-Italian legal academia. The university’s early agreement with the University of Rome Tor Vergata established the first inter-university collaboration between the two universities in fields such as Roman Law research, the translation of Original Roman Law documents, and legal talent cultivation. CUPL also became the first Chinese partner university of the University of Bologna. Over the years, CUPL has developed close partnerships with multiple Italian universities and professional legal entities, achieving notable successes in establishing research institutions, cultivating talent, pursuing collaborative research projects, and creating internationally recognized academic forums. Looking ahead, CUPL remains committed to deepening its cooperative efforts with Italy, fostering mutual learning between Chinese and Italian civilizations, and advancing bilateral cultural exchange.
