On May 18, 2014, Sir Marston C. D. Gibson, Chief Justice of Barbados, visited our university. President Huang Jin met at Xueyuanlu Campus with our honored guests, which also included H.E. Mr. Chelston Brathwaite, the Barbados Ambassador to China, as well as their companions.
President Huang expressed his pleasure meeting Mr. Gibson again and reviewed his delightful experience in leading a CUPL delegation accompanied by Ms. WangKe, Chinese Ambassador to Barbados, to visit the Chief Justice and the Supreme Court of Barbados when our delegates visited that country last month. Mr. Gibson said he is privileged to come to CUPL and have the chance to further communicate with our students and faculty members on topics of common interests.
In addition, President Huang showed his gratitude to Mr. Brathwaite for his role in boosting the collaboration between CUPL and UWI at Cave Hill since its beginning. Mr. Brathwaite remarked that the establishment of the Confucius Institute (CI at UWI, Cave Hill) would provide a great opportunity to promote understanding and communication between the two sides. He firmly believed that CI would evolve into a platform of friendly exchanges between the two universities and the two peoples.
After the meeting, President Huang granted the title of Honorary Professor to Mr. Gibson and issued him the letter of appointment before a crowd of our distinguished guests, CUPL teachers and students.
Mr. Gibson then delivered a speech on “The Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ)” and held a discussion hosted by Professor Kong Qingjiang, Dean of our School of International Law, with representatives of our students and teachers on matters of mutual concern.
