On the morning of October 9, 2014, Vice President Zhu Yong met with Professor Pedro L. V. Welch, Deputy Principal of the University of the West Indies (UWI) at Cave Hill, Barbados and the Director of the school’s Confucius Institute (CI), at Xueyuan Lu Campus. Zhang Xiuqin, Chinese Co-Director of the CI, and Xu Lan, Director of the Office of International Cooperation & Exchange at CUPL, also attended the meeting.
Zhu Yong first extended a warm welcome to Pedro Welch and expressed his gratitude for the great efforts UWI at Cave Hill had made and the strong support it had given to the CI. He pointed out that Barbados is an influential country in the Caribbean, so CUPL had high expectations for the upcoming establishment of its CI. After the implementation agreement was concluded, he hoped that both parties would continue their joint efforts and friendly cooperation to ensure all related works proceed smoothly and as soon as possible. The ultimate goal of all the arrangements is to establish a CI with unique characteristics.
