On the Morning of March 28, the delegation met with Prof. Tony Smith, Pro Vice-chancellor and Dean of the Faculty of Law at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand, and Mr. Huo Jianqiang (Raymond Huo), a Member of Parliament (MP) in New Zealand.
During the past 12 years’ cooperation, the two universities had collaborated on a series of joint projects, including exchange of students, exchange visits of scholars, summer schools, one year abroad study programs, the doctoral program funded by China Scholarship Council. In addition, on July 27, 2011, the two sides had established the Research Center of Politics and Law of New Zealand at CUPL. This visit aimed to comprehensively expand and deepen the existing cooperation, as well as exchange views and reach consensus on certain matters, such as legal training programs, establishing a research center of Chinese law in New Zealand, and the publication arrangements of academic works in China. One of our alumni in New Zealand, Lawyer Liu Wei, also attended the meeting.
The delegation attended the Conference Establishing the ANZ Alumni Association of CUPL
On the Morning of March 29, Vice President Ma Huaide led the delegation to attend the Conference Establishing the ANZ Alumni Association of CUPL, and the ensuing China-Australia Legal Forum. The conference adopted the charter, the name list of its council, and the name list of its executive directors. During this meeting, the Member of Parliament Huo Jianqiang was selected as the honorary chairperson. The ANZ Alumni Association was not only the first of its kind being set up in Oceania by CUPL, but also the third overseas alumni association created by our university, following the establishment of our Alumni Association of North America and its South Korean counterpart. This alumni association aims at building the best platform and making greater contribution to the cooperation between Australia, New Zealand and China.
Vice President Ma and MP Huo delivered keynote speeches
Afterwards, Vice President Ma Huaide, Parliamentarian Huo Jianqiang and Prof. Ren Xiaojiang each delivered the keynote speeches on certain topics, such as the latest developments for legal systems and institutions, the similarities and differences between New Zealand’s and China’s legal system, the comparison of legal teaching between New Zealand and China, concluding with discussion and questions and answers with the alumni in attendance.
The delegation met with Hamish Cochrane, Deputy Vice-chancellor of University of Canterbury, New Zealand
On the morning of March 31, the delegation visited University of Canterbury (UC), and held talks with Dr. Hamish Cochrane, Deputy Vice-chancellor of UC, and Prof. Sonia Mazey, Vice-chancellor and Dean of Business and Law of UC, Associate Prof. Chris Gallavin, Dean and Head of UC School of Law and Mr. Bob Korzeniowski, Director of International Relationships, etc.
Cochrane, Deputy Vice-chancellor of UC, led a delegation to visit CUPL on November 4, 2013. As the first visit between the two universities, it laid the foundation for future cooperation. This visit was intended to introduce respective delegate members and future partners and conduct discussion on the signing of memorandums of understanding on cooperation and promoting substantive future collaboration. The two sides agreed to launch specific cooperation on certain programs, such as summer schools, joint talent cultivation, exchange of students, exchange visits of scholars, legal training, and so forth.
The delegation met with Monique Skidmore, Deputy Vice-chancellor of University of Queensland, Australia
On the afternoon of April 2, the delegation visited University of Queensland (UQ), and met with Prof. Monique Skidmore, Deputy Vice-chancellor of UQ, and Prof. Sarah Derrington, Head of the TC Beirne School of Law at UQ. The delegation and Faculty of Business, Economics & Law, Faculty of Humanities & Social Science of UQ reached preliminary consensus on some cooperation projects, including joint talent cultivation, teachers and students exchange, scholarship programs for LL.M. candidates, and legal training, etc.
