In the afternoon of May 21, President Huang Jin held our University’s ninth Ambassador Forum in the student activity centre at Changping. At our invitation the British Ambassador to China Sir William Ehrman came and delivered a speech to our teachers and students on the “role of politics and law in the UK and its impact on the Sino-British relations”.

Before the forum began, President Huang Jin had a friendly conversation with Sir William Ehrman and the Embassy staff who accompanied him. Firstly he expressed his warm welcome to them, and gave a brief introduction on our university’s history, the teaching staff, the character of the university, and the newly established China-EU School of Law, as well as the state of the international cooperation and exchange at our university. Ambassador Sir William Ehrman expressed his gratitude for his invitation, and was pleased about the cooperation between the University of Manchester and the China-EU School of Law. He hopes to further enhance the exchange and cooperation with our university. The deputy director of the International Cooperation and Exchange office Li Guo Qiang also attended the meeting.

During question time the students enthusiastically asked questions and competed with one another to exchange conversation with the ambassador. The ambassador gave brilliant answers to the questions which the students put forward, such as how to strengthen Sino-British cooperation under the financial crisis, the legal protection of the United Kingdom towards foreign trade, studying abroad in the UK and so on.

Finally, President Huang Jin expressed his gratitude for the ambassador’s wonderful speech and at the same time, hoped that our teachers and students gained more knowledge about the UK through the Ambassador Forum, increased their ability to move in different cultural circles and broadened their purpose of having an international perspective.
