Professor Stephen G. Barnes of Pennsylvania State University Appointed as Honorary Professor of CUPL

In the afternoon of October 26, 2017, the appointment ceremony of CUPL Honorary Professor Stephen G. Barnes, Assistant Dean of Penn State Law, was held at the Xueyuanlu Campus. Gao Huanyue, Vice-Chair of CUPL Council, attended the event and presented the letter of appointment for Prof. Barnes. Prof. Xue Xiaojian, Vice Dean of the School of Law, CUPL, and and Mr. Lyu Yong, Deputy Director of the Office of International Cooperation and Exchange, accompanied Prof. Gao during the appointment ceremony.

Prof. Gao first extended a warm welcome to Prof. Barnes on behalf of CUPL. She said that Barnes had a deep tie with China and CUPL and she recognized his long-term dedication for CUPL. Prof. Barnes has taught in CUPL for 7 years and has helped CUPL to establish formal cooperation with many prestigious partners from the United States, Russia, Croatia and so on. Prof. Barnes is now coming back to CUPL again for short-term teaching. Prof. Gao said that Prof. Barnes had trained many legal talents for CUPL and China. She invited Barnes to come back more frequently.

Prof. Barnes said that China was his second hometown and he felt very honored and pleased to be appointed as CUPL Honorary Professor. Barnes pointed out that it was the diligence and persistence of CUPL students that prolonged his 6-month teaching plan in CUPL to 7 years. He said Stephen Barnes, CUPLer forever.

Prof. Barnes had been a long-term foreign expert in our school from 2008 to 2014. During this period, he taught many courses, including American Constitutional Law, American Administrative Law, American Law and Culture, International Law, Legal Documents and Writing etc., for the School of Law and other schools in CUPL. His courses were very popular among students. Also, he instructed CUPL students in overseas study application and recommended many students to study in Oxford University, London School of Economics and Political Science, Columbia University and many other top universities around the world. He has helped our school to expand international cooperation with many prestigious international partners and has made significant contributions to the internationalization of CUPL.
