President Huang Jin Meets with Secretary of United Nations Commission on International Trade Law

On the Morning of September 14th, President Huang Jin met with Ms. Anna Joubin-Bret, the newly-appointed Secretary of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law, at the Xueyuanlu Campus.

Huang Jin first extended a welcome tp Anna Joubin-Bret for her first visit to CUPL and briefed her about CUPL, including its history, achievements, disciplines and education programs. President Huang Jin pointed out that, as a distinguished law school in China, CUPL highly valued cooperation with international organizations and institutions and encouraged students to work or do internships at international organizations and institutions for enhancing students' international horizons and cultivating their global thinking. In recent years, a large number of outstanding students from CUPL have done internships at international organizations such as the Hague Conference on Private International Law, the Asian-African Association, the World Bank, and the International Criminal Court, and their performance have been widely praised by the employers. President Huang Jin said that, it was a great honor to have further discussion on cooperation between CUPL and UNICITRAL after his meeting with the former Secretary of UNCITRAL in June 2013. He expressed the hope that the two sides would establish long-term and stable exchanges and cooperation, thus providing students and faculty of CUPL more internships, exchanges, and other  opportunities to participate in trade law research projects.

Anna Joubin-Bret extended to Huang Jin her gratitude for the hospitality and spoke highly of the efforts that CUPL had made to promoting cooperation between the two sides. She then introduced UNICITRAL, including its function, principles, operational mechanism and future development plan, and affirmed China's important position and contributions to UNCITRAL. She also expressed her hope for the two sides to deepen cooperation in the future. She strongly agreed with President Huang Jin’s suggestions concerning the mechanism of dispute prevention and settlement and welcomed CUPL staff to actively join the Commission or to work as Observers. She also welcomed students from CUPL to join the short-term internship programs of UNICITRAL.

Later, the two sides further exchanged views on the promotion and development of various cooperation.

After the meeting, Joubin-Bret gave a lecture on UNCITRAL’s Work on Dispute Settlement - an Overview and answered questions from the audience. The lecture was moderated by Prof. Kong Qingjiang, Dean of the School of International Law.

Prof. Xu Lan, Director of the Office of International Cooperation and Exchange, and Prof. Zhu Lijiang, Deputy Dean of School of International Law also participated in the meeting.
