In the morning of October 8th, Prof. Gao Huanyue, Vice-Chair of CUPL Council, met with Prof. Joaquim Ramos de Carvalho, Vice President of Foreign Affairsfrom University of Coimbra, and his delegation at the Xueyuanlu Campus. The two sidessigned the “Memorandum of Cooperation between CUPL and University of Coimbra” as well as the “Academic Cooperation Agreement between CUPL and University of Coimbra”, marking the official establishment of inter-school partnership between the two universities.
Prof. Gao first welcomed the delegation from University of Coimbra and then introduced the history, disciplines, talent training, faculty, as well as achievements of CUPL’s international programs. Especially, she mentioned CUPL waspraised for its leading law discipline. She said thatCUPL was glad to set up cooperation withUniversity of Coimbra, a world-renowned school with more than 700 years of history. Meanwhile, she emphasized that the cooperation would not only contribute to the development of the two universities, but would also help train more legal talent who could speak fluent Portuguese language for China. Prof. Gao hoped that through new cooperation projects, the exchange of personnel between the two sides would be more frequent, thus boosting China-Portugal friendly cooperation in the fields of education, culture and commerce.
Prof. Joaquim Ramos de Carvalho extended his gratitude to CUPL for the hospitality.He then introduced in detail the development history, enrollment and the number of exchange students, the historical significance of the university in the development of Portuguese-speaking countries,as well as the contributions its law school had made to the legal system in Portuguese-speaking countries. He hoped that the cooperation between the two sides could promote further discussion between Chinese and Portuguese institutions in law. He said that University of Coimbra was willing to continue to build channels for CUPL to communicate with more universities in Portuguese-speaking countries.
Later, the two sides discussed in depth the cooperation opportunities and fields in the future. They agreed that the two schools hada lot in common in history, discipline, dominant subjects, and other aspects. These similarities lay a solid foundation for the all-round cooperation between the two universities. The two sides hoped, based on the new cooperation agreements,to gradually expand cooperation in academic research, faculty exchanges,joint development of courses and other areas.

After the meeting, Prof. Gao and Prof. Joaquim Ramos de Carvalho signed the Memorandum of Cooperation and the Academic Cooperation Agreement.
Prof. Rui Marcos, Head of the Law School at University of Coimbra, Head of the Institute of China and Portuguese-speaking Countries, Prof.José Pedro Paiva, Head of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of University of Coimbra, Prof.Zhou Miao, Co-Director of the Confucius Institute of University of Coimbra, Prof.Yu Fei, Deputy Dean ofthe School of Civil, Commercial and Economic Law, Prof.Xu Lan, Director of the Office of International Communication and Exchange, Prof. Zhao Xiaohua, Deputy Dean of the School of Arts and Humanities CUPL, attended the meeting and the signing ceremony.
