In the afternoon of October 22, Vice-President Ma Huaide attended the 5th International Postgraduate Study & Funding Fair, which was held successfully at the Xueyuanlu Campus. Vice-President Ma attended the event and delivered a welcome speech. This year’s International Postgraduate Study & Funding Fair invited 20 representatives from 17 partner universities around the world, such as University of Montreal, Washington University (St. Louis), University of Southern California, The Pennsylvania State University, The University of Leeds, University College Dublin, Leiden University, Uppsala University, The University of Auckland, National University of Singapore, Tel Aviv University, etc. The event aims at facilitating direct communication between CUPL’s partner universities overseas and CUPL students and assisting CUPL students in application for overseas graduate programs in law (including JD programs), politics, management, etc. The 2018 Fair was sponsored by the Office of International Communication and Exchange and Office of Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan Affairs and organized by the Center of Overseas Programs. The General Office, the Graduate School, the Publicity Department, the Security Department, the Office of Logistics Committee and other CUPL offices and departments also provided generous support for it.

At the opening ceremony, Prof. Ma first extended warm welcome to all the guests from afar on behalf of CUPL. He then introduced the recent achievements of CUPL, especially achievements of the implementation of the internationalization strategy. Prof. Ma said, CUPL hoped to establish more platforms like the 5th International Postgraduate Study & Funding Fair to strengthen cooperation and exchanges with prestigious universities worldwide in various fields, including education and training, academic research, social responsibility and cross-cultural interactions. He pointed out that international postgraduate programs was one of the important steps to cultivate professionals with a global vision. Efforts had been made in the past five years to bring cooperation and exchanges to a new height. First, CUPL had expanded the number of partner universities from single digit in 2013 to 57 in 2018 and had set up 69 exchange programs. The number of CUPL students studying overseas rose from dozens to over 200 this year. Second, partner universities offered more scholarships to CUPL students. For instance, The Pennsylvania State University, Loyola Marymount University, and Southern Methodist University offered full scholarships to CUPL students, which greatly relieves students’ financial pressure. Prof. Ma mentioned that these scholarships are also provided for CUPL students majoring in politics, international relations, public management, public policy and humanities. Last but not least, Prof. Ma hoped to further promote cooperation with partners, to advance the goal of “double first-tier”, and to enable more CUPL students to pursue further study in top universities around the world. CUPL also welcomed more students from partner universities to visit us and study in CUPL.
Prof. Stephen Barnes, Assistant Dean of Penn State Law and Honorary Professor of CUPL, delivered a speech as the representative of partner universities.
When I came to work here in 2005, leaders and staff of CUPL talked about the idea of internationalization, but now, the idea has been developed into tangible progress and concrete achievements, more and more CUPL students globally recognized.
He also appreciated CUPL for providing such a platform that connects foreign universities with excellent students in CUPL, and hoped to enhance bilateral cooperation and exchanges through these events.

In the following activities, representatives from overseas partner universities interacted with CUPL students face to face. They introduced their respective university, features of programs, requirements, scholarships in details, and answered students’ questions. For universities and institutions that were unable to attend the event, such as Georgetown University, Waseda University, The University of Sydney, Ng Teng Fong Merit Scholarship and David Paterson Education Fund, CUPL also provided booth for these universities and answered students’ questions concerning application. Staff of the International Office of CUPL also took students’ questions about new programs, the implementation of programs in recent years, ratio of scholarships, signing-up and first round selections. Students who had participated in these exchange programs also attended the fair to share their experiences in application and lives overseas.

Prof. Xu Lan, Director of the Office of International Communication and Exchange, Prof. Xiao Baoxing, Assistant to the Dean of Postgraduate School, and Mr. Lyu Yong, Deputy Director of the Office of International Cooperation and Exchange, also attended the Fair. More than 300 graduates, postgraduates and parents were also present.
