In the afternoon of October 26, representatives from UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees), IOM (International Organization for Migration) and WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization) came together to the Xueyuanlu Campus, CUPL, to attend the "UN Job Fair". This event was one of the series of “UN Job Fair” activities organized by the China Scholarship Council (CSC) which had invited 26 United Nations agencies and other major international organizations to conduct road show in Beijing, Shanghai and Hangzhou to conduct tour presentation. The objective of the event was to enhance the understanding of Chinese university students about international organizations and to help students apply for internships and job opportunities in international organizations. As one of the nine universities in Beijing, CUPL hosted the presentations given by the above three agencies, attracting about 300 teachers and students from 24 universities and colleges in China, such as Harbin Institute of Technology, Xi'an Jiaotong University, Central South University, Beihang University, Central University of Finance and Economics, China Foreign Affairs University and CUPL.
Before the Job Fair, Vice President Shi Jianzhong met with John F. Thomas, Chief, Affiliate Partnerships and Recruitment at UNHCR, Fatima Peregrino-Brimah, Talent Management Associate at IOM, Wang Yi, Senior Officer of WIPO, and Cao Kun from CSC. President Shi Jianzhong welcomed Thomas and his delegation and expressed his expectation for the Job Fair in CUPL. Prof. Shi thanked the CSC for organizing such a meaningful event. He then introduced the history, talent cultivation, disciplines, staff and enrollment of CUPL to the delegation. In particular, he pointed out some major achievements of CUPL: the university was listed in the “double first-tier” universities in China, the law discipline was rated A+ and ranked first in the Fourth Round of China Discipline Ranking, and the university had kept its academic status as the highest institute of China's legal education. Prof. Shi mentioned that the students of CUPL had both a good international vision and a charitable spirit of dedication, and hoped more and more CUPL students could go to UN agencies for internships and employment, thus giving a fresh impetus of building CUPL into an open, international, multi-disciplinary, and innovative world-class law university.
Thomas thanked Prof. Shi for his warm welcome and detailed introduction, and said that he was very happy to visit CUPL and was very much looking forward to the dialogue with students from CUPL. Thomas mentioned that international organizations, such as UNHCR, IMO and WIPO, are dedicated to fields of work closely related to law and legal research, therefore CUPL was an ideal partner. Meanwhile, as global problems were prominent and humanitarian crisis such as refugees and immigrants, caused by wars, bad weather and so on, was getting increasingly serious, there was a growing need for more dedicated young talents who had good legal literacy and professional skills to join relevant UN organizations. Therefore, Thomas said, to organize a Job Fair in CUPL was a targeted and smart decision. Also, Thomas, Peregrino-Brimah and Wang Yi all encouraged and welcomed talented students from CUPL to join UN internship and employment. In addition, the two sides exchanged views on substantive cooperation between CUPL and the three UN organizations.
After the talks, the guests stepped into the academic hall and started presentations. The students present gave a warm applause. The three representatives gave detailed introductions on the mandates, organizational structure, composition of staff, and main responsibilities of their respective organizations, and especially highlighted the recruitment process, cycle, and notices of applications. Subsequently, CUPL teachers and students actively asked questions about international cooperation, global financial and legal issues, and how to apply for UN internships and jobs. The lecture was moderated by Prof. Kong Qingjiang, Dean of the School of International Law.
Also present at the above-mentioned events were Xu Lan, Director of the Office of International Cooperation and Exchange, Wang Qiang, Vice Director of Academic Office, Liu Chengwei, Vice Dean of the Graduate School, Xiao Baoxing, Assistant to the Dean of the Graduate School, Lyu Yong, Deputy Director of the Office of International Cooperation and Exchange, et al. The events were co-organized by the Office of International Cooperation and Exchange and the School of International Law. During the events, Thomas and his delegation also visited the CUPL Qian Duansheng Memorial Hall accompanied by a student narrator.
